Harlow Kneeland grew up on a ranch on the Smith River near Great Falls, Montana. In 1954 Harlow Kneeland began working at the Croxford Funeral Home in Great Falls. While working for Mr. Lloyd Croxford he became friends with fellow mortician Joe Lukkason and they decided to go into business together. On April 19, 1964 Harlow landed in Virginia City, Montana where he worked with Mr. Charles Raper who owned Raper Funeral Homes in Virginia City, Ennis, and Twin Bridges, Montana. Two months later Joe arrived and they purchased the funeral homes from Mr. Raper. Shortly after, Harlow and Joe purchased the Twitchell Funeral Home in Three Forks from Mr. Ken Twitchell. Later in 1966, they constructed a new funeral home in Harrison. Throughout their partnership, Joe and his family lived in Three Forks and Harlow and his family initially lived in Virginia City and then moved to Sheridan, Montana upon opening their funeral home there in 1974 and closing the Virginia City location.
Keith Kneeland, Harlow’s son, grew up in Sheridan, Montana graduating from Sheridan High School and later graduating from BYU with a Master of Accountancy degree in 1996. Keith went on to attend and graduate from Mount Hood Community College with a funeral service degree in 1997. In June 1997 Keith and his wife Kristen returned to Montana and purchased the Scott Funeral Homes in Whitehall and Boulder from Mr. Duane Scott and merged the funeral homes into K&L Mortuaries.
