John Fairbanks Stimson, 84, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, at home in Sheridan, Montana with his family by his side. He was born on February 29, 1940, in Bozeman, Montana, to Kenneth and Elmira Jean (McCay) Stimson. John had the rare distinction of being a Leap Year baby-a fitting reflection of his unique and spirited nature.
John grew up in Bozeman and attended Montana State University before embarking on a long and successful career in business. After MSU, he operated a popular steakhouse on the shores of Flathead Lake and played bass in several bands. He later transitioned into banking, ultimately serving as the president of Ruby Valley National Bank in Sheridan, where he met his wife, Rosabelle Maloney, and built a home.
John had a deep appreciation for nature.
He especially cherished time spent on his wife's family ranch and out on the water.
He also had a lifelong love of music, enjoying both playing and listening throughout his life.
Above all, John treasured time with his family and pets. He found great joy in life's simple pleasures-being at home, tending to his yard, feeding the birds ano squirrels, and watching the many animals that visited.
John is survived by his wife and partner of 40 years, Rosabelle; his sister, Anne Dickerson; his daughter, Wanda Exley; his grandson, Lance Exley; and his great-grandson, Quinn. His family bonds extended beyond his immediate family, as he was especially close with his
sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
His presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A celebration of John's life will be held at Saint Mary's Church in Laurin, Montana on Tuesday, February 11th at 11 a.m.
A vigil will be held on Monday, February 10th at 7 p.m. at the same location.
