Garth Alan Elser

Born and raised in the Heart of the Ruby Valley, Sheridan, Montana, Garth was focused on agriculture and ranching. As a young boy, he only wore blue jeans, western shirts with snaps, cowboy boots and cowboy hats. He rode an All-American pony named Joker. He worked with his dad in the fields, and helped with the sheep, cattle, and pigs. Garth became involved in 4-H and FFA, showing cows and pigs at the Madison County Fair. He won Grand Champion showmanship with his pet pig.

After graduating from Sheridan High School, he continued working at the ranch. Garth had the opportunity to drive semis with the Montana Livestock Auction hauling cattle and traveling in and out of state.

Garth moved to Butte to be closer to his work. He continued working for MLA for years and eventually started his own business hauling livestock. He was passionate about agriculture, and very knowledgeable about cattle. His best cow dog, Ozzy, accompanied Garth in most of his travels. He also cherished his relationships with all his friends, family, neighbors, and fellow cattlemen. Garth never forgot a name or face. He had a great gift for remembering everyone he met. Garth was kindhearted and would do anything for anyone. Garth loved people no matter their age and they loved him too. If he knew you, you became his friend. He kept track of all his relationships. Garth attended more funerals, celebrations, and activities than the average person. He made special trips to the nursing home to visit his longtime friends. Little kids were like magnets, drawn to him. He always had time to talk and listen to you. Garth was a perfect example of what all of us should be. He continued helping others until the end. His corneas were donated through the Lions Club.

Garth spent quality time with his mom, Bonnie. He took good care of her and stayed with her often. He continued to help his sister, Paula, and her husband John, on the ranch. Garth was active in the Bagdad Shriners with his brother Kelly (Lisa). He maintained a close relationship with his sister, Kathy. He was fondly referred to by Candace and Paul as Uncle Bum Bum and always supported them through their endeavors. Garth had a special relationship with his dear friend Liza. He proudly watched his goddaughter, Madison growing up. Garth never missed a visit with his aunt, Ella Rae (Andy).

Garth was a long-time captain of the Shriners Janizary Patrol. He was a member of Mount Mariah #24 Masonic Temple, a 40-year member for the Elks, a volunteer Sheridan fireman, and on the Board of Directors for the Southwestern Conservation Coalition. Garth has moved on to greener pastures and has been reunited with his dad Doug, his niece Natalie, and his Grandparents.

We are opening the gates and tipping our hats in Garth's honor at the Twin Bridges Fair Grounds in the Pavilion building on Saturday, October 19 th at 1:00 PM with a luncheon to follow.
